Day of the Week Gnome Peg Dolls Tutorial

Welcome to our Sage Village series giving you a sneak peak into our Waldorf-Inspired Homeschool with my 4 year old son. In this video we'll share how we made Peg Doll Gnomes for our perpetual calendar!

For young children, the names of the days of the week and months are very abstract concepts, especially when presented on a grid calendar. Perpetual calendars which depict the cyclical rhythms of nature are much more tangible, especially when each day is given recognizable characteristics.

In the Waldorf tradition, each Day of the Week is assigned a particular color, planet, grain, right action, key and stage of life, etc. Personifying the days by corresponding colored Gnomes named by the planet/day helps the child to align with the natural energies and more easily relate to the passing of time.

This is our first time making peg dolls with these materials, so maybe we'll make a new batch as our skills improve, but nevertheless it was an engaging activity that has brought a new level of observation to our days.
